  • About

We work for you. We provide electric service to 1.8 million customers and natural gas service to 1.7 million customers in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. All told, we serve more than 6 million Michiganders. Best job ever.

We produce much of the electricity you need right here in Michigan. Our plants use a variety of fuel sources. Having a diverse fuel mix enables us to better manage costs to keep your bills manageable. We buy 100% of the natural gas we need and use our unique storage fields to buy and store natural gas when prices are lowest. This keeps your bills lower too.

William Augustine Foote was a flour mill operator who liked to tinker with electricity. His hobby would ultimately lead to one of the nation’s largest combination electricity and natural gas companies. But not before he and his brother would solve a lighting problem in downtown Jackson. This is what happens when a curious mind meets a challenge.

Our founder’s spirit of innovation and community service lives on today. You can see it in the thousands of men and women who work hard to provide you with safe, reliable and affordable energy. It’s visible in our strategy to build a strong, sustainable energy future for Michigan. And it’s alive in the 68 counties we serve through our commitment to improve the quality of life for you and your community.

We’ve been working for Michigan families and businesses for more than a century. We got our start in Jackson in 1886 and remain headquartered there today. We’re the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy.
